Metal-bodied Samsung Galaxy S5 coming on August 13

Samsung is reportedly launching the metal-bodied variant of it's flagship Galaxy S5 on August 13, just a month ahead of the rumoured launch iPhone 6.

Samsung has long been derided for using plastic in its top smartphones when rivals like Apple, HTC and Sony go with materials like metal and glass. The Galaxy S5 variant with metallic body has been in the rumour mill for nearly six months, initially called Galaxy F and then Galaxy Prime.

However, a report by South Korea's ETnews.com says that Samsung will go with the name Galaxy Alpha for its first metal-bodied smartphone. Though the report does not give many details, it says that Galaxy Alpha will be compatible with the LTE-A network of South Korea, which provides three times faster 4G internet speed.

A report by Korea Herald says that Samsung Galaxy S5 may come in two variants,

  1. 4.7-inch Full HD (1920x1080p) display
  2. 5.2-inch QHD (1440x2560p) screen.

Earlier rumours have said that Apart from the high-resolution screen, the premium version of Galaxy S5 is said to have a metal body, 20MP rear camera, 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor and 3GB RAM. The rumour mill also says that Galaxy S5's premium variant will also come with an eight-core processor option in markets where 4G penetration is low.

In contrast, the original Galaxy S5 has a plastic body, 5.1-inch Full HD screen, 16MP camera on the back and 2GB RAM; the smartphone comes with Snapdragon 801 as well as eight-core processor options as well.
