iOS 16.4 : A brief review.

There are several new features and enhancements in iOS 16.4, the newest version of Apple's operating system for iPhones and iPads. I was eager to explore this new update and discover what it has to offer as a tech blogger and ardent iOS user.

The new Control Center layout is one of iOS 16.4's most noteworthy changes. All of your favourite controls are now conveniently located in the Control Center, which has been revamped to be more manageable and user-friendly. You can select which controls are shown and arrange them in the order that makes the most sense to you thanks to the new design's customizability.

New privacy capabilities have been included in iOS 16.4, which is another noteworthy development. Apple's dedication to preserving user privacy is demonstrated in this release via features like App Privacy Reports. Users can now see how frequently apps are accessing private information like your location, microphone, or camera thanks to this new feature. Users can use this information to make educated decisions about which apps they wish to grant access to their personal data.

Apple Music receives improvements as part of iOS 16.4. With new tabs for recently played music and recommendations, the new edition of the Music app has a revamped interface that is simpler to use. Additionally, the app has improved audio quality and new spatial audio features that make listening more engaging.

The new Focus mode in iOS 16.4 is one of the more subtle changes. With this new feature, users can design personalized notification settings based on their activities or location. For instance, you can configure a focus for work that only accepts alerts from job-related apps, or a focus for personal that only accepts notifications from loved ones.

In general, iOS 16.4 is a sizable release that adds a lot of new features and enhancements. There are many positive aspects of this update, from the revamped Control Center to the improved privacy features. I strongly advise updating to iOS 16.4 and checking out all the new features if you use iOS.

Apple unveils the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 with Retina HD screen

Tim Cook took the stage at the start of today's event and almost immediately announced the new iPhone 6. The Apple iPhone 6 is based on iPod touch looks and has a 4.7" screen.

The screen is protected by "Ion-strengthened glass", which is curved around the edges for a more seamless experience when swiping. The screen itself is an LCD with "Retina HD," which translates to 750 x 1,334 pixels. This pushes the pixel density to 326ppi.

Despite the new resolution, apps will "just work" thanks to a desktop-class scaler. This will only be needed until devs update their apps to support the new resolution.

The 8MP iSight camera is back for a fourth year in a row. Apple claims the camera has been improved now - it still has 1.5µ pixels, but features phase detection autofocus and sits behind an f/2.2 aperture. There's no OIS though, it relies on digital stabilization. The camera can shoot panoramas up to 43MP.

The video resolution is kept at 1080p but the 60fps has now been promoted to the max FullHD resolution (up from 720p @ 60fps). Slo-mo video can shoot at 120fps and 240fps, but at a lower resolution.

The chassis is made of anodized aluminum with a stainless steel Apple logo. The body is just 6.9mm thick.

The Apple iPhone 6 is powered by a second-generation chipset, the Apple A8. It offers 25% more CPU power and 50% extra GPU oomph. The chipset is built on a power-efficient 20nm process, which also makes it 13% smaller physically than its A7 predecessor.

Apple promises the battery life for the new iPhone 6 will be equal or better than the 5s. It will do up to 14 hours of talk time. Aside from the regular GSM calling, it supports VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) and Wi-Fi calling (for T-Mobile in teh US and EE in the UK). LTE has been updated to support up to 150Mbps downlink (Cat. 4) and supports up to 20 bands.

Other connectivity upgrades include Wi-Fi 802.11ac for three times faster Wi-Fi speeds. Finally, there's also NFC now, which enables Apple's new Apple Pay service for wireless payments.
The M8 co-processor succeeds the M7 and is coupled with a barometer. The two accurately track changes in elevation and can even count the steps you've taken.

The Apple iPhone 6 will cost $199 for the base 16GB model (with two-year contract). There's no 32GB model this year, $299 buys you 64GB instead and there's a $399 128GB version. Pre-orders start on September 12, the phones will ship on the 19th.

Apple officially announces the much awaited iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5" display

The Apple iPhone 6 Plus is now official. It's built around a 5.5" IPS LCD display with an Retina HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels with 400 ppi). iOS 8 has been tweaked to take full advantage of the larger display.

The back of the iPhone 6 Plus is made of anodized aluminum and the stainless steel frame of the phone ensures its rigidity.

The user interface has been optimized to take advantage of the larger screen and offers split-screen mode in several apps like earlierleaks suggested.

The new 64-bit A8 chip that powers the Apple iPhone 6 Plus is built using the 20nm manufacturing process. Thanks to this it's more power efficient, while still offering 25% more CPU power and 50% GPU boost.

The iPhone 6 Plus supports 20 LTE bands, but only 150Mbps cat4 LTE, rather than the latest 300Mbps Cat 6. On the positive side the phablet comes with VoLTE and Wi-Fi 802.11ac, which promises 3x faster Wi-Fi compared to the iPhone 5s. Wi-Fi calling is also a new feature, which will work on T-Mobile in the US and EE in the UK.

Further on, the iPhone 6 Plus packs NFC, another first for the company. Thanks to it, you'll be able to make payments by using Apple Pay - Apple's own NFC payment system.

At the back, the iPhone 6 Plus uses a 8MP iSight camera with a True Tone dual LED flash. The pixel size is the same as on the iPhone 5s at 1.5μ and the aperture is unchanged at f/2.2. However the iPhone 6 Plus has an optical image stabilization - a first for the company.

There's also phase-detection autofocus that should improve focusing speed twice. It is enabled by the A8 chip, which also includes powerful image signal processor designed by Apple.

The Apple iPhone 6 Plus camera records 1080p video at 30 and 60fps. There's a slow-mo shooting available, too, at 240fps, but its resolution hasn't been specified.

The Apple iPhone 6 Plus will start at $299 for the 16GB version, while the 64GB and 128GB will retail for $399 and $499, respectively.

iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders commence on September 12 and shipments being a week later, on September 19.

Alleged Apple iPhone 6 specs revealed by China Mobile

Less than a day before the official announcement, the alleged specs of the Apple iPhone 6 leaked out. The information was posted online by China Mobile – the largest wireless carrier in the world.

Purportedly, iPhone 6 will feature an Apple A8 chipset with quad-core CPU and 4.7” display with the rather unimpressive resolution of 1134 x 750 pixels, covered by sapphire glass.

According to China Mobile’s sign-up page, the iPhone 6 will pack an 8MP main camera and a 2.1MP front-facing unit. The device will be available in versions with 16, 32, 64, and 128GB of built-in memory.

Physical measures of the iPhone 6 are listed to be 138mm x 67mm x 7mm. Curiously, the Chinese carrier lists the device as being water and dust resistant.

China Mobile has listed only the specs of the 4.7” iPhone 6 model. Information on the 5.5” model is not displayed.

New images show iPhone 6.

We have seen plenty of images of the rear shell and the front panel of the phone before but this is the first time someone put them together and photographed them. Assuming all the parts are authentic in design, this is pretty much what the iPhone 6 is going to look like.

The design harks back to the metal body of the very first iPhone launched back in 2007. The flat sides and chamfered edges of the current iPhone have been replaced by a simple curve, with the display fused at the top. The back is now one piece part and wraps around the sides, similar to the iPhone 3G, 3GS and the 5c. Except here it's metal.

This here seems to be the 4.7-inch model, but the 5.5-inch model will seemingly have the same design, only bigger.

Google and HP discussed making an enterprise Nexus device

According to report in The Information, Google and HP discussed making an enterprise-centric Nexus device. The two tech giants also talked over the past year about utilizing Google Now as a corporate tool.

Google and HP primarily discussed potentially making Google Now useful in a corporate environment. The search giant's creation would allow employees to easily lookup and access company information such as financial or inventory data.

Regarding the enterprise-centric Nexus device, HP envisioned a product with high-end hardware encryption. Google however, was allegedly not as enthusiastic as the hardware company on the subject.

A potential collaboration between the two companies would rival the recently announced strategic partnership between Apple and IBM. Talks between HP and Google however, have reportedly fallen through.

Detailed images of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 leak

Here's what the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 may look like. While looking very similar to the front of the current Note 3 the back and sides look new.

The phone appears to retain its previous trend of plastic back with leather-like texture but the sides look similar to the ones on the yet-unannounced Samsung Galaxy Alpha and appear metal.

There's a plastic-like inlay in the side-frame that seems to add more water to the frame being metal rumors. The S Pen holster is etched into the side of the phone and there's a microUSB 3.0 port at the bottom along with a speaker grille.

There's what looks like a hear rate monitor alongside the camera lens on the back. The display of the Galaxy Note 4 should be 5.7" once again but with an improved resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels (QHD).

The retail box of the Galaxy Note 4 has also made an appearance. The design on the front looks similar to the one in the images above adding some more credibility to the leak.

The Galaxy Note 4 will be shown (as is customary with Samsung) this coming September 3 on the IFA floor and should make it to the shelves starting September 15.

Sony rolling out KitKat for Xperia E1 and E1 dual

Sony started delivering KitKat to the Xperia E1 and Xperia E1 Dual. The update is rolling out now though there might be delays varying by market and carrier. Go to Check for updates in the About screen of the settings on your phone to see if you're among the first to get it.

The update boasts performance enhancements that stem from Android 4.4 KitKat. Other than that the changes are similar to what the Xperia T2 Ultra got, including a tweaked status bar and quick toggles. The custom Sony apps like the Walkman music player, Stamina Mode and others have been updated too.

Despite Google's changes to KitKat, Sony has enabled moving apps to the external microSD card in case the 4GB of built-in storage starts to run low.

Another change is the inclusion of PlayStation 4 like boot animation and live wallpaper. You can change up the look with Xperia Themes.

The Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 dual are next in line to receive KitKat.

Motorola XT1097 aka Moto+1 does Geekbench

The Motorola Moto XT1097, what is thought to be the Moto X+1, has been caught out in the open again. This time it was spotted in the Geekbench database, which reports Android 4.4.4 KitKat and Qualcomm 8974AC Snapdragon 801.

The chipset features four Krait 400 cores at 2.45GHz, Adreno 330 and 2GB of RAM.

The AnTuTu benchmark was done on Android 4.4.3 however. That benchmark result and additional rumors claim a 5.1-5.2" screen with 1080p screen, 12MP camera with an unusual dual-LED flash and a 2,900mAh battery. It will have a selection of wood backs too.

There's a successor to the Moto G visiting benchmarks too, that one aims lower with a 5" 720p screen and a Snapdragon 400 chipset. It bears the XT1063 model number.
